Cambodia is known for its hot, humid, and muggy weather. While its warm climate makes it a great location for vacationing, this means a lot of sun exposure to harmful UV rays is also inevitable. Learn how to stay safe and cool while visiting Phnom Penh.

It’s no secret that the heat and humidity in Cambodia can reach unbearably high temperatures. When visiting the Kingdom of Wonder, it’s important to stay cool to prevent yourself from overheating. Luckily, we’ve got some tips on staying cool in Phnom Penh weather and protecting yourself from harmful sun UV rays.

Stay or Visit a Hotel with a Swimming Pool in Phnom Penh

Don’t overlook this tip! Even if you’re not an avid swimmer, taking a dip in a hotel swimming pool is an excellent way to stay cool in Phnom Penh. Plus, you can also get in some great cardio exercise without overheating yourself. Family-friendly pools also offer a fun time for kids and a relaxing one for adults – a win-win situation for all! For added protection from the sun, try looking for pools with shaded lounges or swim areas.

Wear Breathable Clothing

Roaming the city in hot, humid, muggy weather can be downright miserable. While there’s no easy solution to change the weather, you can change your wardrobe to stay cool in Phnom Penh. When shopping for clothes, check that they’re slightly loose from your body so that they won’t cling to your skin. If they’re too tight, you may feel discomfort as the clothing soaks up your sweat. Moisture-wicking and quick-dry clothing also prevent sweat from sitting on your skin, which will help you feel more comfortable. In addition, avoid wearing darker colors since those may absorb the sun’s rays, making you feel warmer. Instead, opt for lighter colors like white or khaki to reflect these rays.

Rest During Peak Heat Hours

You might want to travel or do a lot during daylight, but it’s best you don’t in Phnom Penh! Between 10 AM – 2 PM, it can get unbearably hot, and the UV index can be dangerously high. Even if you’re wearing long, protective, and breathable clothing, excessive sun exposure can pose harmful risks to your skin. Instead, during those peak hours, consider lunch in air-conditioned malls like AEON or resting and enjoying your hotel’s amenities. Better yet, live like a local and take an afternoon nap where you’ll be cool and safe from the sun!

Look for Accommodations with Air Conditioning

When you’re sweating profusely, enjoying a good night’s rest is hard. It’s even worse when your room is like a sauna in the daytime (no afternoon naps)! Even if you’re backpacking through Southeast Asia and are looking to save money, air conditioning is one thing you probably shouldn’t go frugal on. While you think you can get by with just fans, they just aren’t enough to beat the Cambodian heat. Needless to say, if you don’t have enough sleep, you’ll likely have a less enjoyable trip. Moral of the story: get a room with air-conditioning!

Have Fun and Stay Cool in Phnom Penh

As you explore the streets of Phnom Penh, remember to be mindful while having fun in the sun. Always check weather apps to know which exact hours to avoid and plan your day accordingly. While you may not want to waste daylight or spend extra money, staying cool in Phnom Penh should also remain a priority for your health and safety. Ultimately, you’ll have a more cool and comfortable trip in Phnom Penh!
